Pacific Studios - digital media and website production

About Pacific Studios

Green sea urtle, IndonesiaPacific Studios was built specifically to help those building or maintaining websites and the associated photography and video that are so common and necessary online now thanks to the proliferation of related online services, broadband internet access, cheap and easy-to-use digital cameras and video cameras, and hosting solutions that are more affordable now than ever before. Creating a website may be easier than it used to be but your competition is growing everyday and Internet Time is still what it is....

This site is provided by me, David Campbell of MarineBio.org, Inc., where since 1998 I have been learning, building and running one of the most popular and important online sites concerning marine life and its conservation. I decided to create this site for multiple reasons which include a revenue source, a reference of what I've learned concerning the Web and building websites for public use as well as our group, and to save time helping people struggling with online solutions.

I began seriously working with computers and creating websites in 1995, shortly after the creation of the first graphical web browser. My first computer was an Apple IIe and I spent many hours playing the first Castle Wolfenstein (it wasn't useful to me for much else). My Father then bought the first family PC and I helped him create a website for his business while also playing DOOM on Windows 3.11. Oh the good ole days. Like many others, we went to the shelves at the local computer store for a solution to building a website. We found it in a box, or so we thought.

I don't remember the name of the software we bought to build our first website but it did teach me one thing, if you want something done right, you'll have to learn how to do it yourself. I then began the long journey of learning about HTML, images, links, and what a computer really is. Windows 95 came out shortly after that and after about 18 reinstalls and around 3 months of swearing and late nights, I was hooked.

I learned everything I could online and started buying books on javascript, graphic design, usability, and e-commerce. I graduated college in 1993 and began also working as an environmental geoscientist investigating and cleaning up environmental messes. In my life I've worked as a dishwasher, busboy, waiter, carpenter, handyman, mechanic, truck driver, roughneck, web designer, webmaster, field geologist, creative director, production manager, creative consultant, and senior project manager for both environmental and Web companies. I'm 43 now and I have just begun. Who said you have to pick one thing to do in life?

I suppose I am truly a jack-of-all-trades, master of a few. This site contains (or will eventually) what I have learned over the years from the countless people online providing their input, time, knowledge, and help to improve not only marinebio.org but all sites and therefore the Web itself.

If there's one Golden Rule in building websites or producing online photography or video, I think it's "Reward your visitors". In short, make it worth their time when they visit your website or view your online photos or videos. How to do that exactly is hopefully covered in this website.

I thank you all for your tireless assistance and priceless skills that you chose to share with us all. I hope you find this site useful and visit often. Enjoy!
